FAQ

What is Cooperative Housing?
Cooperative housing is an alternative living option to dorms, apartments, fraternities, and sororities. In many ways it is like the Greek fraternity and sorority system. The primary difference is that cooperative houses don’t outsource daily chores such as cooking and cleaning. Members all participate in getting these tasks done. There are 7 women’s cooperatives and 5 men’s cooperatives at Purdue.  To learn more about the Cooperative system as a whole visit PurdueCooperatives.org.

What is recruitment?
Recruitment is the new member selection process that occurs in conjunction with the entire cooperative system. Recruitment takes place during two weekends at the beginning of second semester, usually in early February. During recruitment, you will have the opportunity to visit each of the houses in the cooperative system, learn more about the system as a whole, and interview at the house or houses in which you are interested. Following recruitment, houses send out bids to recruitees. If you receive a bid from Fairway and accept it, you are a member of our next year’s pledge class!

What is pledgeship?
Pledgeship is the process by which each new member learns about Fairway, our purposes and history, and also the active members in the house. During pledgeship we focus on devotion to God and brothers, love for the house, development of self-discipline, and strengthening of character. Your pledge semester is a special time of growth and unique memories. Pledgeship begins when you move into the house and is scheduled to last 8 to 12 weeks during the fall semester.

How much time does pledgeship take?
Pledgeship takes a considerable amount of time during the first semester. There are tasks that must be completed each week and different events throughout pledgeship that the new members must be part of. With that said, Fairway is dedicated to strong academics and exceptions are made when pledgeship conflicts with academic events such as review sessions or group projects.

How many hours of house duties does each member have to do each week?
Each member of the house works 2 to 4 hours a week doing house and meal duties.

How far is Fairway from campus?
When looking at a map of the Purdue campus Fairway looks like it is far away, but it really isn’t.  When the weather is nice members often walk or ride bikes to and from class.  Fairway is less than a mile from the Purdue campus.  There is a bus stop right by the house that most members use during the winter.

How much does Fairway cost per month?
Currently, each member of Fairway pays $510 per month for rent. You only pay the months that you live at the house. (August through May) Future rent price is subject to change but should be close to the current cost.

What about Fairway Parties?
Fairway hosts a party every 4 to 6 weeks that is open to all Purdue students.  All parties are completely dry.  There is absolutely no alcohol allowed on Fairway’s property at any time.  Parties usually last 3 to 4 hours and there are always several hundred people that attend.

Do I need to buy a meal ticket if I live at Fairway?
No, you do not need to buy a meal ticket. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided by the house Monday through Friday. There are often leftovers and other foods at the house on weekends also.

Can I bring my car?
Yes, all members (including freshman) are allowed to bring their car and keep it at Fairway. However, there is a parking fee each semester.

How many guys are in a single room?
Each room has 3 or 4 guys depending on the size of the room.

Where do I sleep?
Each floor has a large room (called the “CAD”) with 16 bunk beds for each person living on that floor. All members sleep in the CAD.

Is Fairway involved in athletics?
Yes, Fairway is actively involved in many of the recreational sports offered at Purdue. Last year Fairway athletic teams won championships in flag football, sand volleyball and outdoor soccer.

Does everyone attend the same church?
No, members of Fairway go to a variety of churches in and around the Lafayette area.

Are there events at the house that are designed to help you grow spiritually?
Yes, there are weekly functions that allow members and also others outside the house to grow spiritually. Each Wednesday night there is either Devos (Devotional time at Fairway) or ACI (Devotional time in a different cooperative). Within the house there are also small groups (3-6 per group) that meet once a week and go over a set of scriptures.
